Description: | Separated from the Defiance Plateau on the west by Red Valley and Black Salt Valley, extends north from Chuska Peak in NM to a point 7 mi east of Los Gigantes Buttes in AZ. North end at 363500N1091700W, south end at 355200N10848000W; 88 km (55 miles) long and 16 km (10 miles) wide. |
History: | Navajo Indian name 'chosgai' means 'white spruce' or 'fir, first reported by Alexander W. Doniphan's 1846-7 expedition. A proposal to change the application of this feature was submitted to the Board in September 1982; on 11 August 1983, the USBGN made the decision to not approve the proposed change and reapprove the application as stated in the 1963 BGN decision. |
